Database Administrator

DBA is a person who has a central control over both data and application programs that accesses those data. The responsibilities of DBA vary depending upon job description and organization policies. The functions of DBA include -
Schema definition and modification : 
The overall structure of database is known as database schema. DBA creates the original database schema by executing a set of data definition statements. DBA also carries out the changes to the schema according to changing needs of organization.
Security enforcement and administration :
DBA is responsible for establishing and monitoring the security of database system. By granting different types of authorization the database administrator can regulate which part of database various users can access. The authorization information is kept in a special system structure that the database system consults whenever someone attempts to access the data in the system. The other responsibilities of database administrator are adding and removing users, auditing and checking for security problems.
Routine maintenance :
Database administrator's routine maintenance activities are ensuring the enough free disk space is available for normal operations  and periodically backing up the database to prevent loss of data in case of disasters such as flooding.
